Meet Wanyi from the My Tiong Bahru team!

Hello everyone! I am Wanyi and I have been volunteering at My Community for about 2 years now. I guide the My Tiong Bahru heritage tours in both English and Mandarin! To be perfectly honest, I never have that strong ‘personal attachment’ to this estate before joining the tour – I did not grow up in this area! In fact, I joined the My Tiong Bahru team simply because it could accommodate my full-time working schedule!

Over time, I have fallen in love with this neighbourhood. As someone who loves to explore Singapore, I love how this estate is so strongly weaved into Singapore’s larger history and heritage. For me, the history of Tiong Bahru is synonymous to the Singapore Story. From how this neighbourhood developed from a hilly area dotted with graves and swamps to the hippy, modern town it is today, I can never stop sharing stories about this wonderful place!

In this never-done-before tour, my team (comprising myself, May, Clarence and Daisy) is very excited to bring you to the old and new sacred spots in Tiong Bahru. With each of us having different guiding styles and interests, there is surely something new to be learnt about Tiong Bahru at every single time slot! See you then!

More about Tiong Bahru

The quaint neighbourhood of Tiong Bahru – known for its elegant 1930s-1950s art deco residential blocks and its network of trendy cafes and popular hawker stalls – comfortably straddles both the past and present. The estate started out as a lowland swamp and hosted the first public housing estate by the Singapore Improvement Trust in the 1930s. The area continued to grow and develop over time as its population increased. In additional to its aesthetic merits and historical roots, Tiong Bahru is a desirable estate to live in today with its wide range of amenities and facilities.
