Meet Mr Robin Chua!

I may not be a bird keeper myself but I have definitely picked up a thing or two from the Kebun Baru members and their winged companions. I have volunteered at the club for the past 13 years and I continue to do so because this club embodies the notion of a community.

Here, the hobbyists are so passionate about their feathered friends. Out of 365 days in a year, you can see them in action for 363 days (the two days of absence being Lunar New Year)! Every day, the hobbyists will hoist their cages up the poles, sit in the shade and share care tips with one another. To me, this community has developed organically and I am proud to play a part in keeping this going.

More about Kebun Baru Birdsinging Club

Meaning ‘new garden’ in Malay, the Kebun Baru Birdsinging Club started as an informal community in Ang Mo Kio back in the 1980s. Over time, the club’s membership grew and the club was later formalised and registered in 2008. Birdsinging begins as early as 6am in the morning and extends into the late afternoon every day. From Pasir Ris to Jurong, hobbyists come from all over Singapore to train their birds at this special place. The club’s growing membership base includes individuals from all walks of life including taxi drivers, CEOs, doctors and engineers.
