I’m Kaiyan, your regular millennial trying to live her best life. I dream of running a guesthouse by the sea, where travellers can share their stories over a cosy meal (and ice-cold beer!).
a place you’d always want to return to.
The highlight of my menu is abacus seeds made with sweet potato only. According to my older relatives, the original sweet potato dish my grandparents made in Pulau Tekong was not shaped like abacus seeds. They were taught by their parents to form rectangular logs (similar to konnyaku) from sweet potato and flour for ancestral rites — appreciated for their likeness to gold bars. It was then sliced and cooked in broth or stir-fried. Only after moving to mainland Singapore did my grandparents try shaping the dough into the circular “abacus seed” shapes like the Hakkas from Dapu, China.
Kitchen Movements, a series of events curated by The Party Elves, provides a platform for home chefs to shine and share their dishes. They focus on self taught passionate home cooks who cook with locally sourced, sustainable ingredients. Kitchen Movements hopes to cultivate a community that comes together over a shared love of home cooked food and the belief in a giving community.
