Hello everyone, I am Alvin – a graphic designer turned potter, specialising in gas and wood firing techniques. I first encountered pottery back in design school and have refined my techniques through the years, learning from various masters in Singapore and Bangkok. I have since showcased my pottery internally and have even produced my own unique line of teaware.
where I feel safe and loved. It’s a place where I don’t have to define my strengths and can be my true self.
To me, teaware design is all about surprise – there is such a thrill every time I open up the kiln to receive my new works. Even with the same glazes and methods, each piece turns out differently, imbued with its own unique character.
Studio 09 is run by the duo Alvin and Andy. Alvin specialises in gas firing and wood firing teaware, frequently conducting gas kiln firing experiments to methodically explore both “local clay” and “local ash”. Andy, on the other hand, explores and innovates with various traditional techniques of effigy restoration, expanding his practice into pottery to culminate in a syncretic artistic endeavour.
