Follow Dr Ji Ling from the Taoist College on a tour of the Hougang Dou Mu Gong (also known as Kew Ong Yah Temple) to understand the temple’s elaborate history and the many Taoist deities housed within! Find out more about Taoist prayers and practices, specifically those surrounding the Nine Emperor Gods Festival, held during the Lunar Ninth Month! Introduce yourself
I’m Jiling, the academic director of Taoist College Singapore. After graduating from the National University of Singapore, I have been working on local Chinese religions for the past eight years. My research focuses on the Nine Emperors Gods (九皇大帝) and the City Gods (城隍公).

How does your religion cultivate a sense of community and home?
In my research, I found that Taoist beliefs can be transmitted vertically between generations of families and horizontally between neighbours in a community. Family members are united by praying to the same deities. Social activities between neighbours are usually also carried out during Taoist celebrations to bring the community together.
About Hougang Dou Mu Gong (also known as Kew Ong Yah Temple)
Hougang Dou Mu Gong is the oldest temple in Singapore dedicated to the worship of the Nine Emperor Gods. Constructed in 1919 and completed in 1921, the temple is home to several deities in the Taoist pantheon from the Nine Emperor Gods (九皇大帝) and Lady Mother of the Dipper (斗母元君) to the Monkey God (齐天大圣) and Lord General Tiger (虎爷将军). For its rich cultural, religious and historical significance, the temple was designated a National Monument on 11 January 2005.

- Participants are required to wear a mask during this tour.
Attire
- Participants should be dressed respectfully in smart casual (i.e. collared shirt, long pants and covered shoes). Sleeveless attire, shorts/miniskirts or sandals are strictly not allowed.
- Participants will be denied entry if they dress inappropriately.
What to bring
- Participants should bring along an umbrella and a bottle of water. Participants are encouraged to bring their own earphones (with a standard 3.5mm audio jack) as radio guides will be used for the tour.
- Asthmatic individuals are encouraged to bring their inhaler.
