Hailing from South Africa, Candice believes that food is more than just a way to nourish the body. She will be serving up her signature dish, Bunny Chow — a hearty curry originating from Durban, South Africa.
Contrary to its name, bunny chow does not actually contain any rabbit meat! This dish, however, does bear great significance to South Africa, embodying the nation’s struggles and resistance while it was under apartheid. Bunny chow was invented as a way to sell food to black people who weren’t allowed to eat in certain restaurants during apartheid. As the food was served in the bread itself, nothing needed to be returned after eating. This way of serving has become popularised and it is now considered an iconic dish.
Kitchen Movements, a series of events curated by The Party Elves, provides a platform for home chefs to shine and share their dishes. They focus on self taught passionate home cooks who cook with locally sourced, sustainable ingredients. Kitchen Movements hopes to cultivate a community that comes together over a shared love of home cooked food and the belief in a giving community.
