What you’ll do:
Contrary to its name, bunny chow does not actually contain any rabbit meat! This dish, however, does bear great significance to South Africa, embodying the nation’s struggles and resistance while it was under apartheid. What’s the story behind the dish you are presenting?
Bunny chow was invented as a way to sell food to black people who weren’t allowed to eat in certain restaurants during apartheid. As the food was served in the bread itself, nothing needed to be returned after eating. This way of serving has become popularised and it is now considered an iconic dish.
About Kitchen Movements
Kitchen Movements, a series of events curated by The Party Elves, provides a platform for home chefs to shine and share their dishes. They focus on self taught passionate home cooks who cook with locally sourced, sustainable ingredients. Kitchen Movements hopes to cultivate a community that comes together over a shared love of home cooked food and the belief in a giving community.
Attire
- Participants should be dressed respectfully in smart casual (i.e. collared shirt, long pants and covered shoes). Sleeveless attire, shorts/miniskirts or sandals are strictly not allowed.
- Participants will be denied entry if they dress inappropriately.
What to bring
- Participants should bring along an umbrella and a bottle of water.
- Asthmatic individuals are encouraged to bring their inhaler.
