Join the communities at Hougang and Bukit Timah for an enriching discussion on how the Bahá’í Faith approaches neighbourliness and community building.
During the event, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about the key tenets of the Bahá’í faith. Dive deeper into how the Baha’is conduct home prayer, worship, and community service, and how these practices foster unity and inclusivity.
We will also explore different perspectives on neighbourliness and community building. Prepare to be inspired, broaden your understanding, and forge meaningful connections during this enlightening event.
Meet Your Host
About K Elango, Padmaja Elango and Neighbours
K Elango and Padmaja, along with Katherine, share a common love for plants, which sparked their initial conversations. Over time, their bond grew stronger as they shared meals, engaged in regular prayer and conversations, and celebration of Bahá’í Holy days together. On the other side of the apartment, James resides. What started as a daily “Hi” greeting blossomed into a genuine neighbourly relationship. They not only exchanged food and fruits but also showed genuine concern for everyone in their block. Their regular gatherings near the lift lobby on the 6th floor, complete with tables and chairs, became a cherished space for tea and friendly conversations. Together, they even planned neighbourhood gatherings, fostering a sense of community spirit and togetherness.
About May Bong Kang Moi, Sothie Laxhmie and Neighbours
May Bong often reaches out to her neighbours, inviting them for meals and devotional gatherings. In fact, she knows almost every shop tenant and resident staying at her place at Balmoral Plaza! Sothie Laxhmie stands beside May Bong in her efforts, offering her support to ensure that everyone feels included and comfortable during these gatherings. Another cherished friend of May Bong’s is Liauw Sona Istari Luwia, a fellow Bahá’í member with whom May Bong has enjoyed countless shared meals over the past two decades. Lastly, joining this exceptional group is Wong Teng Yon Ling, a colleague of May Bong’s who often finds a warm welcome at the devotional gatherings and activities at May Bong’s home.
About the Bahá’í Faith
Originating from Persia (modern Iran), the first Bahá’ís who settled in Singapore arrived from India in the early 1950s. By 1952, Singapore was home to a dozen Bahá’ís and a local governing body was elected to meet their needs. There are no priests, docents or clergies in the Bahá’í faith and the affairs of the Bahá’í community are managed by annually elected Spiritual Assemblies at the national and local levels.
