Hop on a tour before dawn to the agricultural heartland of Tangkak and watch Shengta vegetable farmers harvest, wash and pack leafy greens for distribution in Singapore – just in time for your morning market run.
Join us on an agricultural escapade to the bountiful lands of Tangkak, Malaysia, where we’ll meet vegetable farmer Kidds Tan. At Shengta Plantation, a family legacy, Kidds and his brothers work tirelessly to supply Singapore and Johor with an array of fresh produce, from vibrant kangkong to crisp lettuce. Join the farmers and have a go at harvesting your own vegetables before dawn. Afterwards, witness how Shengta’s vegetables are packed, labelled, and redistributed near Johor Bahru before it arrives in Singapore. End the trip at Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre, where the vegetables are redistributed to our wet markets. Don’t miss this eye-opening and enlightening journey through Tangkak’s agricultural heartlands with Kidds Tan!
Kidds Tan, at 34 years old, continues the legacy of Shengta Plantation, which was passed down from his father. Alongside his two brothers, they collectively manage the plantation that has been in their family. Kidds Tan, a father of four children, represents the youth and educational aspects of the Federation of Vegetable Farmers Association. As part of the federation, Kidds Tan will be shedding light on the unpredictable nature of vegetable farming and the misconceptions held by some wholesalers. Despite these challenges, Kidds Tan and his dedicated team work tirelessly, with their workers beginning the vegetable harvest as early as 1-2 am daily. Every day at 8am, the freshly harvested vegetables are collected, washed, and loaded onto lorries for delivery.
Shengta Plantation plays an important role in supplying Singapore with a variety of vegetables, including kangkong, spinach, chives, and lettuce. Their commitment to providing fresh produce is unwavering, with their workers labouring tirelessly, even working on public holidays, except for Chinese New Year and Hari Raya. Recently, Shengta Plantation has expanded its farming endeavours to include guava, jackfruits, and other crops. With a team of 170 foreign workers and 25 local workers, they ensure the quality and quantity of their produce through meticulous harvesting and grading processes.
