What You'll Do
This tour offers participants a rare glimpse into the Oxley Rise synagogue – a stunning national moment which is usually closed off to the public. Participants will meet Rabbi Nissim Zawady, who will take you on a tour of the monument and share the importance of neighbours to the Jewish community.
Chesed-El Synagogue is one of the oldest synagogues in Southeast Asia and serves as a focal point for the Jewish community in Singapore. Featuring a beautiful blend of architectural styles, combining elements of Sephardic, Ashkenazi, and Moorish influences, the building has a distinct colonial-style facade with intricate details, arched windows, and a dome that adds to its visual appeal.
Don’t miss the prominent and ornate Torah Ark, also known as an aron kodesh, which houses the sacred Torah scrolls and is often beautifully crafted and adorned with intricate carvings and decorative elements. Also, Bismah, the central raised platform within the synagogue, where the Torah is read and prayers are led. It serves as a focal point for the congregation during religious services.
The concept of neighbours in Judaism is rooted in the teachings and principles found in the Torah (the Jewish holy scripture) and Jewish tradition. Judaism places a strong emphasis on treating neighbours with kindness, respect, and compassion. For instance, the concept of Tikkun Olam, which means “repairing the world,” encourages Jews to actively work towards making the world a better place by engaging in acts of social justice, pursuing equality, and addressing societal issues.

About Rabbi Nissim Zawady
Judaism has taken Rabbi Nissim across the globe – from Colombia (his hometown) to Israel and from Greece to Singapore. No matter where he goes, he always feels the warmth and generosity of the local Jewish community and Singapore is no exception! It is this spirit of generosity that touches him time after time, giving him the motivation to do what he does.
About Chesed-El Synagogue
Singapore is home to two synagogues – the Maghain Aboth Synagogue at Waterloo Street and the Chesed-El Synagogue at Oxley Rise. Both places of worship were gazetted as national monuments in 1988. Chesed-El means “Mercy of God”. The synagogue has been the centre of many Jewish activities. According to Rabbi Nissim, there are approximately 2,000 Jewish people in Singapore today.

What to bring?
- Participants must bring along their NRIC, which is mandatory for entry into the restricted premises. Participants who do not bring their NRIC may be denied entry at the event premises.
- Participants should be dressed respectfully in smart casual (i.e. collared shirt, long pants and covered shoes). Sleeveless attire, shorts/miniskirts or sandals are strictly not allowed. Participants will be denied entry if they dress inappropriately.
- Participants should bring along an umbrella and a bottle of water.
- Participants are encouraged to bring their own earphones (with a standard 3.5mm audio jack) because we will be using radio guides for the tour!
- Please ensure that you bring along any personal medication. Asthmatic individuals are reminded to bring their inhaler.

- Please arrive 15 minutes before the tour for registration.
- The tour will proceed rain or shine.
- Parking is available at Singapore Shopping Centre (190 Clemenceau Ave, Singapore 239924) (Approx. 5 min walk to Chesed-El Synagogue).
- The venue is wheelchair accessible.
- Photography is allowed at event premises.
