Join Sandy and My Community at the void deck on Saturdays afternoons, where truckloads of fresh vegetables and fruits arrived, courtesy of Fridge Restock Community SG. These are offered to the less fortunate in her community.
Madam Goh, or Ah Hua, hopes that these activities will foster a ‘kampung’ culture, where neighbours share and care for one another. Over the years, the community has become more open and transparent. If someone runs out of salt, for example, they can come to the Senior Residents’ Corner and borrow it. A few days later, they return with a new bag of salt to replace what they borrowed.
Madam Goh believes that when the community helps someone, that person will, in turn, contribute as a volunteer or a donor within the community. This is how the ‘kampung’ culture takes root.
Her aspiration is for the ‘kampung’ spirit of Bedok Reservoir to inspire other HDB estates. She believes that all it takes is for people to step forward and extend a helping hand.
Sandy, affectionately known as “Ah Hua,” has been a resident of Bedok for 16 years. She leads a team of 100-150 dedicated volunteers to collect and redistribute fruit and vegetable donations from Pasir Panjang Wholesale Centre to all parts of Singapore. Every Tuesday and Saturday, Sandy gathers residents from Bedok Reservoir to sort through the food donations – sometimes late into the night. Thanks to Sandy and her team, the residents at Bedok Reservoir are tightly knit, often organising block parties and potlucks during festive occasions which sometimes attract as many as 500 residents!
