What You'll Do
Changi Boatel is a little T-shaped mooring dock for fishing boats and vessels. A restricted site, this tour offers an exclusive access into one of the last remaining venues for Singapore’s remaining fishermen.
In the 1980s and 1990s, residents from Pulau Tekong and Pulau Ubin were relocated to the mainland (Tampines, Bedok and Marine Parade) because of ongoing reclamation projects and the repurposing of the island for military training and other supporting infrastructure.
In response to the residents’ desire to maintain their maritime way of life, a petition was submitted to the government, requesting a designated space for them to dock their vessels. After a series of discussions and negotiations, the government recognised the importance of preserving this aspect of their livelihoods and allocated a space at Changi for their docking needs.
The allocated space at Changi serves as a dedicated fishing zone for the residents, allowing them to cast their nets, set up fishing gear, and carry out their traditional fishing techniques. The boatel is equipped with facilities such as fishing platforms, storage areas for equipment, and waste disposal facilities.

Despite the development of Singapore over the years, Changi Village has managed to retain its old-world charm. The fishing community is just one example of this. If you take a stroll down to the mooring base, you’ll see the fisherman hard at work preparing their lines and baits, chatting and joking with one another. It’s a sight that is both fascinating and heartwarming. The recreational fishermen would head out to get food enough for their family while the occupational fishermen would sell their catch to the markets. So, the next time you’re in Changi Village, be sure to swing by the mooring base and say hello to the friendly fisherman! Who knows, you might even get lucky and snag a fresh catch for dinner.

What to bring?
- Participants are encouraged to dress comfortably!
- Participants should bring along an umbrella and a bottle of water.
- Participants are encouraged to bring their own earphones (with a standard 3.5mm audio jack) because we will be using radio guides for the tour!
- Please ensure that you bring along any personal medication. Asthmatic individuals are reminded to bring their inhaler.
Other important information
- Please arrive 15 minutes before the tour for registration.
- The tour will proceed rain or shine.
- Parking is available at Changi Beach Park Car Park 2 (511 Nicoll Dr, Singapore 498990).
- The venue is not wheelchair accessible.
- Photography is allowed at event premises.
