Ong Yeong Fang, the owner of Guan Lhee Fish Farm, has a deep-rooted connection to the fish industry. Having previously worked as a fish wholesaler in Johor Bahru until the age of 24, Mr Ong carries on the legacy of the farm started by his father. Alongside his siblings, he now manages the farm, ensuring its continued operation. However, Mr Ong faces challenges in maintaining the viability of the farm, as he reveals that declining water conditions resulted in the loss of approximately $1 million worth of fish in 2020. He further highlights the significant decline in fish survival rates, with only 20-30% of the fish now surviving compared to 20-30 years ago when 90% would thrive.
Supervising the farm is Kamaludin, who has been an integral part of Guan Lhee Fish Farm for over 20 years. Hailing from Lombok, Indonesia, Kamaludin is dedicated to his work and frequently engages with his family through Whatsapp calls. With two children of his own, he maintains a strong bond with his loved ones while fulfilling his responsibilities at the farm. Together, Ong Yeong Fang and Kamaludin contribute to the operations of Guan Lhee Fish Farm, navigating the challenges and changes in the industry to ensure its continued success.
